The Costa Smeralda is a coastal area and tourist destination in northern Sardinia, 55 km
long and covering more than 30 km². With white sand beaches, a golf club, private jet and helicopter service, and hotels,
the area has drawn celebrities, business leaders and other visitors. The main towns and villages in the area, built according to a detailed urban plan, are Arzachena, Porto Cervo, Liscia di Vacca, Capriccioli and Romazzino. Archaeological sites include the Li Muri "Tomba dei Giganti" (Giants' Grave). In 1960 the prince Karim Aga Khan discovered the spectacular coast of Arzachena whilst he flew overhead by plane. Within a year, 5000 hectares of land were already in the hands of the prince, who founded a syndicate in order to change all the territory in an exclusive centre. The syndicate and the coastline took on the name of Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast); its boundaries well determined by two enormous granite boulders on either side of the road which carry the symbol of a stylized emerald. The activities related to tourism allowed Arzachena (municipality in which was created the little village) to became a world-famous village and let its economic growth. The world television networks broadcast the images of the Costa Smeralda waters, as well as those of the VIPs spending their holidays by the sea. |
